What an XML sitemap does (and does not do)

A sitemap helps search engines discover canonical, indexable URLs – it is not a ranking boost button and it does not force indexing.

Use it so Google and other crawlers can find new and updated URLs efficiently, especially on large or sparsely linked sites. Keep thin archives, faceted filters, and noindex URLs out.

Native WordPress sitemaps vs SEO plugins

Core ships /wp-sitemap.xml; Yoast, Rank Math, and others can replace or extend it.

Native – available since WordPress 5.5. Index at https://example.com/wp-sitemap.xml with provider files for posts, pages, users, taxonomies (filterable).
Yoast / Rank Math / similar – often disable the core sitemap and add richer controls, image entries, news/video where licensed, WooCommerce products, and Search Console helpers.

Run one sitemap system. Duplicate competing sitemaps confuse everyone, including you. If a plugin owns SEO, let it own the sitemap and confirm core output is off.

Google limits and sitemap indexes

One sitemap file may contain up to 50,000 URLs and must stay under 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites need a sitemap index.

WordPress and major SEO plugins already split files. Still verify in Search Console that every index child returns 200 and that URL counts match expectations after migrations.

What to include: canonical and indexable only

List the URL you want indexed – not every parameter variant your theme can invent.

Prefer the canonical absolute URL (correct host, HTTPS, trailing-slash policy).
Skip noindex, login, cart, checkout, thank-you, search results, and staging hosts.
Usually exclude thin tag / author / date archives unless they are intentional landing pages. Helper: Disable indexing of archive pages.
For WooCommerce, include products/categories you want crawled; keep filter/sort parameter URLs out unless you have a deliberate faceted SEO strategy.

priority, changefreq, and lastmod

Google ignores priority and changefreq. Update lastmod only when the content meaningfully changed.

Fake daily lastmod on unchanged posts wastes crawl budget and trust. Touch lastmod when you update the body, primary media, or structured data that affects the page – not when a sidebar widget rotates.

Search Console, hreflang, images, news, products

Submit the index URL, then fix errors instead of re-submitting endlessly.

GSC – monitor “Couldn’t fetch”, “Sitemap is HTML”, and excluded URLs that still appear in the file.
hreflang – multilingual setups need consistent alternates; sitemap annotations must match on-page/HTTP annotations.
Image / news / product extensions – use when they match your content type and plugin support; do not invent entries for decorative icons.

Implementation checklist

Open /wp-sitemap.xml or your SEO plugin sitemap index; confirm a single system is active.
Spot-check that listed URLs are 200, canonical, and indexable.
Remove or noindex thin archives and parameter URLs.
Ensure lastmod tracks real edits only.
Submit the index in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
After migrations or permalink changes, re-verify counts and 404s.
